What Is FSSC 22000 Certification and Why Does It Matter?
FSSC 22000 (Food Safety System Certification) is a globally recognised food safety management system standard owned by Foundation FSSC, a not-for-profit body.
It is built on three pillars: ISO 22000:2018 (food safety management), sector-specific Pre-Requisite Programmes (PRPs, including ISO/TS 22002-1 for food manufacturing), and FSSC Additional Requirements. It is benchmarked and recognised by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) — the internationally accepted benchmark for food safety standards.
Unlike FSSAI licensing, which is a mandatory legal requirement under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, FSSC 22000 is a voluntary international certification. However, in practice it is increasingly non-negotiable for businesses supplying to international retail chains, institutional food service buyers, or exporters targeting markets in the US, EU, UK, UAE, and Southeast Asia. Major global retailers and brands now require their suppliers to hold a current, valid FSSC 22000 certificate as a procurement condition.
The current active version is FSSC 22000 Version 6, which became mandatory for all audits from April 1, 2024. Version 6 introduced strengthened requirements on food safety culture, quality control, allergen management, food fraud prevention, and equipment management. FSSC 22000 Version 7 is confirmed for publication in May 2026, with a 12-month transition period for all currently certified organisations.
The FSSC 22000 certification process involves a two-stage audit by an FSSC-licensed and NABCB-accredited certification body: Stage 1 (documentation and readiness review) and Stage 2 (full on-site assessment). The certificate is valid for three years, with annual surveillance audits required to maintain certification — one of which must be unannounced.
Is FSSC 22000 Mandatory for Your Food Business?
FSSC 22000 food safety certification is not required under Indian law, but it has become a commercial necessity for a wide range of food businesses operating in competitive domestic and international markets.
Food manufacturers supplying to large organised retail chains, quick service restaurant networks, or institutional food service companies will typically encounter FSSC 22000 as a procurement requirement. Any food facility exporting to the US, EU, UK, or Gulf markets where international buyers demand GFSI-recognised certification must treat FSSC 22000 as effectively mandatory.
Packaged food brands scaling into modern trade and e-commerce channels find that private-label buyers and platform aggregators increasingly demand GFSI-benchmarked safety credentials before listing. Dairy processors, spice exporters, food ingredient manufacturers, and beverage producers in Gujarat — many of whom serve both domestic and international buyers — are among the most active businesses pursuing FSSC 22000 certification.
Food packaging manufacturers supplying to certified food businesses are themselves often required to hold FSSC 22000 or an equivalent GFSI standard. Animal feed manufacturers and food storage and distribution businesses are also within scope for relevant FSSC certification categories.
What Happens If You Don't Have FSSC 22000 Certification?
For exporters, a missed export order due to failed buyer qualification can cost:
₹50 Lakh
per shipment in lost business — not accounting for reputational damage to the supplier relationship
Procurement Disqualification
When a large retailer, QSR chain, or export buyer conducts a supplier qualification audit and finds no GFSI-recognised certification, they will typically remove that supplier from their approved list. Re-entry takes 6 to 18 months of certification work.
Underprepared Businesses Pay More
Businesses that begin FSSC 22000 without structured preparation — attempting implementation without addressing foundational gaps — frequently fail Stage 1 or Stage 2 audits. Re-audits extend the timeline by 3 to 6 months and add audit fees on top of the original cost.
These are preventable situations. We've helped 4500+ businesses across Gujarat and India build compliant systems and approach audits with confidence — without disruption to ongoing operations.
How We Handle Your FSSC 22000 Certification — Step by Step
End-to-end. No confusion, no surprises.
Compliance Assessment and Gap Analysis
We begin with a structured assessment of your current food safety management system against the full requirements of FSSC 22000 Version 6 — covering ISO 22000:2018, your relevant sector-specific PRPs (typically ISO/TS 22002-1 for food manufacturing), and FSSC Additional Requirements including food fraud prevention, allergen management, and food safety culture. We identify precisely which gaps exist between your current operations and what the certification audit will require. No confusion. No surprises. Just clear, guided progress from day one.
Documentation Preparation and System Build
FSSC 22000 requires comprehensive documented evidence across your entire food safety management system. We prepare and verify all required documentation: the Food Safety Management System Manual, Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) plans, Prerequisite Programme (PRP) records, Food Defence Plan, Food Fraud Vulnerability Assessment, allergen management procedures, traceability records, and management review documentation. Every document is reviewed for completeness and Version 6 alignment before submission.
Implementation Support and Internal Audit Preparation
Documentation alone does not achieve certification — the system must be implemented and evidenced on the factory floor. We work with your team to align actual operations with documented procedures, identify any gaps between paper systems and operational reality, and prepare your internal audit protocol. In our experience working with Gujarat food manufacturers, the Stage 1 audit failure rate is highest among businesses that have strong documentation but weak operational implementation — this is exactly the gap we close.
Audit Coordination and Authority Liaison
We coordinate with your chosen FSSC-licensed, NABCB-accredited certification body for Stage 1 and Stage 2 audits. We prepare your team for the audit process, manage document submission timelines, and handle any non-conformances or clarifications that arise during or after the audit. For unannounced annual surveillance audits, we ensure your system documentation and records are maintained in a perpetually audit-ready state.
Certification and Ongoing Compliance
COMPLETEOn successful completion of the Stage 2 audit, your FSSC 22000 certificate is issued, valid for three years, with annual surveillance audits to maintain it. We guide you on certificate maintenance, Version 6 ongoing requirements, and how to prepare for surveillance audits well in advance. Many businesses we work with continue into USFDA Registration as the next stage of their export compliance architecture — since many US buyers require both USFDA facility registration and FSSC 22000 or equivalent GFSI certification simultaneously.

ISO Certification

FSSAI GAP Analysis
A comprehensive GAP analysis identifies operational and documentation gaps against both FSSAI standards and international food safety benchmarks like FSSC 22000 — making it the ideal starting point before entering the certification process.
USFDA Registration
Food businesses exporting to the United States typically need both USFDA facility registration under FSMA and a GFSI-recognised food safety certification — FSSC 22000 satisfies the latter and significantly strengthens buyer confidence.
